Comment on Speaker of the House tours Union Depot by Bill Jungbauer

According to local sources, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was to drop into town to tour the area and visit the old Union Depot.

Pelosi, McCollum, Oberstar and Ellison did not "tour the area" but stayed locked inside the depot protected by police, highway patrol and security guards well away from those of us activists who arrived to voice our opposition to their socialistic national policies.

I tried to attend and was told, "Invitation only" and was turned away at the door. It was clearly an election year photo op and press opportunity for Pelosi's favorite Minnesota liberals. It was absolutely not a public event.

Pelosi was sped away with a state highway patrol escort out of the tunnel underneath the depot.

As usual, and in predictable Betty McCollum fashion, she was not available to the public, or to address the concerns of us gathered outside. She refuses to debate Teresa Collett or any past opponent running against her and survives as a candidate by wearing the "D" after her name.

What is Betty afraid of? As the 4th Congressional District candidate, Teresa Collett once said, "Come out and play Betty." This is what the people want, to see and hear the candidates so they can have the information to judge and decide for themselves.

Betty is afraid to debate. Why? Because she is not very good at it. Take 2008. Ed Matthews put her to shame at a League of Women Voters forum. This being the one and only time I have witnessed her in a debate. This should have gone well for Betty but it didn't. However "non-partisan" they try to be, the League of Women Voters generally come up short in their attempt. So does Betty as a debater.

So it's obvious why Betty does not debate. But in the end it's we the people, the voters, who come up getting short changed with her lack of participation in public debate.

It appears that after nearly 60 years which is through my life time, that the Twin Cities is getting deserved Transportation.
I keep hearing stories that the bad men that took out the street cars through the 50's went to Jail.
While, other cities pass us up for decent Transportation. it is short of laughing stock of the nation.
Just to name a few. Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Chicago & San Francisco has always had decent Rail Transportation.
Then, St Louis, Dallas, Austin, TX, Salt Lake of all places,"Conservative L-D-S" Vancouver, Toronto, Seattle, Portland, Richmond, Baltimore.
Minneapolis and St Paul had gotten bigger and more Traffic Jams in my life time. what was once Farm land is now cut up for roll houses.
That being said. we don't have anymore space to keep building Interstate w/o taking land. General Mills for Example. luck out and a new deserved drive way.
With People around here want a new Viking Stadium. we need better Transportation to get people in and out of town safe. their is no parking. most likely downtown Minneapolis. The light Rail going to the Airport and the Mall has proved to worked. I suppose that it will work on the 16 route along University.
However, the light rail won't stop on every bloody blocked. I am excited to see what happens next. in 1974. it was never ever figure that the Twin Cities would improved its Transportation. from pointless buses to rail.

Hi, Dan: Thanks for the comment. In answer to your questions: Amtrak has committed to moving its operations to the Union Depot when the station reopens in 2012. Greyhound and Jefferson Lines will also relocate there and have been active partners in the planning of the project. As for the Red Rock Corridor, planning continues on that line, led by Washington County. Planners updated their county board in February, telling them they expected the line to be built by 2018. For more about the Red Rock project, check out their web site here.

It looks awesome! I really like that Kellogg Blvd. passenger drop-off. The whole project looks classy and modern. Is it for sure that Amtrak will be moving operations there, and when will we hear about Greyhound coming to Union Depot and also if the Red Rock Corridor will be constructed?
